Siluettes
This series of paintings begun in the late 1980’s and reflected my modest but increasing interest in Semiotics. I am now adding new images to this series, continuing to explore the way signs operate as conceptual vessels.
I am always searching for iconic images that signify some social or culturally defining moment. I am drawn to history as well contemporary issues; often enough finding that they intersect in profound ways; one illuminating the other.
In this body of works, I am particularly interested in reducing the signifier to a most elemental level, freed of detail and other aesthetic distractions. I seek to minimize expression and instead present the image as bare as possible, inviting the viewer to complete them.
While I choose images from political history, popular culture, and shared experiences, I also think that the choice of images, emerge from something deeply personal in relationship to history, its passage and memory.
